The Shala River (Lumi i Shalës) is a secluded, crystal-clear river that winds through the deep gorges of the North Albanian Alps, accessible only by boat via Lake Koman. It has earned the nickname "The Thailand of Albania" due to its striking turquoise waters and the dramatic, jungle-like limestone cliffs that flank its narrow banks.
Insider Tips
You cannot drive to Shala River. You must take a boat from the Koman Dam. Most boats depart between 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM. If you miss this window, you have to come back the next day. A round-trip boat ticket costs roughly 20-25€
If you go to the Shala River in July or August, expect hundreds of people, loud music, and a "beach club" vibe. It is not a peaceful wilderness escape during peak season

The river is named after the Shala tribe, one of the most powerful clans of the high mountains; local legend says the area was the final retreat of Prince Lekë Dukagjini, the 15th-century nobleman who codified the Kanun, the traditional laws of honor and blood feud that governed the Albanian highlands for half a millennium
