About
Shakespeare’s Globe is a stunning, faithful recreation of the original 1599 theater where many of Shakespeare’s plays were first performed. Located on the banks of the River Thames, it offers an authentic Elizabethan experience, from its open-air stage to its standing-only “groundling” section
Insider Tips
Shakespeare’s Globe is one of the best places in the world to experience Shakespeare’s plays as they were originally intended. The open-air theater, the wooden benches, and the standing groundling section all contribute to the feeling of stepping back in time to the 1600s
For a truly unique (and affordable) experience, you can stand in the “groundling” section just like theatergoers did in Shakespeare’s day. These standing tickets are cheap, often around £5, which makes it accessible to anyone. While standing as a groundling is an iconic experience, be prepared to stand for the entire performance, which can last up to 3 hours!
Did you know?
The original Globe Theatre burned down in 1613 during a performance of Shakespeare’s Henry VIII when a misfired cannon set the thatched roof on fire. The current Globe, built in 1997, is a near-perfect replica and one of the only buildings in London with a thatched roof, as that type of roof was banned after the Great Fire of London in 1666!
