The Caves of Artà have a rich history, having been known since the times of the Christian conquest when Jaume I found 2000 Arabs hiding within. The caves were also explored and chronicled by French geologist Edouard Martel in 1876, and it is believed that these caves inspired Jules Verne’s novel "Journey to the Center of the Earth
