During WWII, the Đurđevića Tara Bridge was a strategic prize. In 1942, to stop an Italian advancement, the Partisans blew up the central arch; the engineer who designed the bridge, Lazar Jauković, actually helped place the explosives to ensure only one arch was destroyed so it could be rebuilt later. Tragically, he was captured and executed on his own bridge by the occupiers shortly after
