Ladder of Kotor (Trail)

Ladder of Kotor (Trail)
About
The Ladder of Kotor is an old Austro-Hungarian military trail that zigzags steeply up the mountains above Kotor in a dramatic series of switchbacks, offering panoramic views over the Bay of Kotor and leading all the way to the village of Njeguši and beyond.
Insider Tips
Unlike the San Giovanni Fortress trail starting from the Old Town, this one doesn’t require an entry fee and tends to be quieter. It starts just beside the old water power plant outside the town's fortifications (North Gate). You'll likely meet goats on your way!
You can reach the Kotor fortress from this trail but you'll have to climb and sneak in through an old fortress window. Do not go down the classic fortress trail with the steps on the way back because they check tickets when visitors return and you'll have to pay the 15€ access fee if you can't provide a ticket
Did you know?
The trail has 72 switchbacks (yes, someone counted!) and was once the only way to connect the Bay of Kotor to the Montenegrin interior before modern roads were built. Local traders, soldiers, and even royalty used this same path to cross the rugged terrain of Montenegro centuries ago
