About
Our Lady of the Rocks is a popular Marian shrine in Montenegro, located on an artificial island near Perast
Insider Tips
Our Lady of the Rocks is a 15th-century island church that’s been protecting the seafarers of the Bay of Kotor for over 500 years. A short boat ride from Perast or Kotor takes you to the island where, for €2, you can take a tour through the church and attached museum. Don't expect to spend too much time on the island, it's a rather brief experience
Boats depart continuously from the Perast waterfront to Our Lady of the Rocks. Most tours cost around €5 for a return ticket
Did you know?
The island began as a pile of rocks, and according to legend, on July 22, 1452, two fishermen discovered an image of Virgin Mary there, leading to the construction of a tiny Orthodox chapel, which was later replaced by a Catholic chapel built by the Venetians in 1630, and the island was further expanded by piling rocks from the mainland and by sinking old ships, a custom that continues to this day with the annual tradition of citizens throwing rocks into the sea, known as "fašinada"
