Podgorica is the capital and largest city of Montenegro, situated in central Montenegro near the confluence of the Ribnica and Morača rivers
Insider Tips
Despite being the country's capital, Podgorica is far from being the most appealing city in Montenegro and is usually skipped by visitors. However, its relatively central location means that nothing is really far away: both Lake Skadar to the south and the mountain interior to the north are less than 45min away, while you can be cooling off by the coast within 1h
Podgorica Airport is located 11 km south of the city and there is no public transport from the airport to the city, but taxis charge a fixed fee. From the city center, buses can bring you to most parts of the country: Cetinje, Herceg Novi, Žabljak, Kotor, Kolašin, Budva, etc. The railway station is on the main line linking Bar to Belgrade (and stopping at Kolašin and Bijelo Polje)

Podgorica has undergone five name changes and has been controlled by Romans, Turks, and Austro-Hungarians. It was heavily bombed during World War II and was known as Titograd in honor of Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito until 1992
