Stari Bar has a history dating back to around 800 BC, when it was founded by the Illyrians. Throughout the centuries, it has been under the control of various powers including the Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans. The town was significantly damaged by Montenegrin shelling in 1878 and a devastating earthquake in 1979, leaving many of its buildings in ruins
