About

The Tara Canyon is the deepest gorge in Europe (1,333 meters) and a UNESCO World Heritage site characterized by dense pine forests, 40+ waterfalls, and an 82 km stretch of river that forms the natural border between Montenegro and Bosnia

INSIDER TIPS

Rafting is the most popular activity, offering stunning views of the canyon's sheer cliffs and lush forests. The rafting season runs from April to October, with the best time being May and June when the water levels are highest due to melting snow (Class III and IV rapids). In summer, it's beginner friendly with lower water levels and Class II rapids

The Đurđevića Tara Bridge offers one of the best viewpoints over the canyon and surrounding mountains. Most rafting excursions start there and you can also cross the canyon via zip-lines

The main access point to the canyon is through the town of Žabljak, which serves as a base for many outdoor activities in the area. It is an 18 km (25-minute) drive from Žabljak. If you don't have a car, almost every hostel and hotel in Žabljak arranges daily shuttles
