Lake Shkodra (Liqeni i Shkodrës) is the largest lake in the Balkans, a vast karst expanse shared between Albania and Montenegro that serves as one of Europe’s most important bird sanctuaries
Insider Tips
The lake is home to the rare Dalmatian Pelican and many other bird species. The best spots on the Albanian side are the wetlands near the Montenegro border and the reeds around Shiroka
The two fishing villages of Shiroka & Zogaj are the "pearls" of the Albanian shore. Shiroka has been recently renovated with a modern promenade, while Zogaj remains more rugged and traditional. There is a dedicated, scenic bike path from Shkodër to Shiroka (approx. 8km). Cycling is the best way to experience the lake and rentals in the city cost about €5–€10 per day
